Structure vs. Freedom

When leading your teams, do you crave structure or give freedom? In business, we have the desire for structure and control. The need for certainty, strong business plans, balanced business scorecards, and disciplined change management methodologies.  These are all great management tools but need to be balanced, not only for the scale of the organisation you are working with but also for the need for Empowerment, the act of giving power to someone.

Have you ever wanted your people to ‘Just do it’?  To get on with the job, cut through hierarchy and officialdom, and deliver today?  Too little control and you have corporate anarchy – too much and you are the bottleneck.

Today’s changing world demands the ability to iterate, to test and learn, to try and fail but to do so quickly.  The leadership challenge is to put in the parameters and know the risk and on occasion live with 80% right.

It lends itself to the ‘agile agenda’ but goes much deeper than this. It is bringing on the next generation of leaders.
